Who Should Take The CMCP Exam?

The Certified Mission Critical Professional (CMCP) certification is a vendor-neutral, globally trusted program for professionals protecting critical operational technology (OT) infrastructure from physical and cyber-related attacks. CMCP validates the foundational knowledge required to prevent attacks and mitigate risk.

Many roles within mission critical infrastructure would benefit from professionals achieving the CMCP certification to assist with the continuous maintenance of critical systems:

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Engineering Technicians are responsible for operations and maintenance of the communication channels connecting computers with remotely controlled equipment, as well as, the equipment in the network. Tasks and responsibilities may include:

  • Interfacing with SCADA transmission and control companies for data and network continuity
  • Providing technical support for SCADA systems
  • Troubleshooting DNP protocols, RTU communications, and SCADA and ICCP issues
  • Monitoring system logs and responding to abnormal system conditions

Electronic Control Technicians work with the controls behind electronic equipment.  They monitor and assess control systems and carry out repairs under intense pressure to ensure there is no halt in a production process.  Tasks and responsibilities may include:

  • Completing projects using SCADA & HMI programming and maintaining documentation
  • Installing and calibrating instrumentation
  • Performing all duties in conformance with applicable code requirements
  • Designing, installing and/or troubleshooting electrical and electro-mechanical components

Protection & Control Technicians maintain controllers that regulate the functions of a system.  These technicians work in a variety of mission critical environments including automotive, and aerospace and industrial automation. Tasks may include:

  • Scheduling and job scoping of pre-planned outages, including SCADA checkout
  • Participating in the installation, maintenance, and repair of on-site electrical equipment
  • Understanding the different zones of protection associated with each relay system
  • Familiarity with alarm relays, line relays, transformer relays, etc.

Petroleum Technologists are involved in the determination of the specific properties and classification of crude oil, which will determine the refining parameters.  During the refining process, laboratory petroleum technologists perform testing and evaluation of various samples.  Requirements may include:

  • Knowledge of field instrumentation and SCADA
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures
  • Knowledge of environmental protection methods and devices for the natural gas industry
  • Knowledge of circuit analyses and basic electrical measurements
